Short travel notes from our journey camping in the Russian wilderness on the road between Irkutsk and Novossibirsk.

 

Day 6

  • Location: On the west shore of Lake Baikal
  • Terrain: Somewhat sloped but otherwise beautiful lake side forest
  • What’s cooking? We cheated and ate a meat solyanka in a café
  • Weather: sunny and glorious
  • Insect level: 2/10 (!!!!)
  • Morale: high
  • King’s ginger required? No

We were fortunate enough to stumble upon an unmarled but purpose-made campsite in the wilderness

  • Terrain: grassy glade in the forest
  • What’s cooking? Mabo nasu (Chinese style spicy mince with aubergine)
  • Weather: overcast / drizzling
  • Insect level: day shift 7.5/10 to nightshift 6/10
  • Morale: fair to high
  • King’s ginger required? yeah, why not

  • Terrain: freshly-cleared loggers camp in the forest
  • What’s cooking? Malaysian Massamam curry with grilled liver!
  • Weather: sunny / cloudy
  • Insect level: 5/10
  • Morale: moderate (due to late arrival and food-related mishaps)
  • King’s ginger required? No

Day 9

We were lucky enough to meet fellow travelers, Fabio and Synthia and shared with quiet wooded campsite with them.

  • Terrain: grassy track surrounded by trees
  • What’s cooking? spicy prawn pilaf with miso soup
  • Weather: cloudy / rainy
  • Insect level: night 7/10 to morning shift 8.5/10!
  • Morale: sky-high
  • King’s ginger required? Very much yes!
